Blizzard hits north-east US, five dead

A record breaking blizzard hammered the north-eastern United States today, cutting power to 700,000 homes and businesses, shutting down travel and leaving at least five people dead.

The storm, that stretched from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic, has dumped more than 3 feet (90 cm) of snow across the region, the National Weather Service said.
