US to 'maintain more than 8,000 troops in Afghanistan' past 2014

Speaking in Brussels the German defence minister has said that American military chief Leon Panetta has indicated that the US will leave between 8,000-12,000 troops in Afghanistan after 2014.

The US has previously said it would withdraw from Afghanistan by then.

US Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta has denied the claims.
