Pope Benedict XVI's brief foray into the world of Twitter will come to an end when he leaves office, CNN has reported, citing Vatican Radio.

More than two million people have followed @Pontifex, reading his messages in nine languages, since he issued his first tweet on December 12.

He has since sent out 35 more Papal ponderings and pronouncements, most recently promoting Lent as a way to "rediscover faith in God", but will cease communication via social media when his tenure ends on February 28.
