Thousands of people angry about austerity measures imposed by the Spanish government, have gathered in central Madrid to peacefully voice their opposition.

The demonstrations coincide with the 32nd anniversary of a failed attempt by the armed forces to overthrow the government.

Similar protests are planned in 86 Spanish cities. The government says it must impose cuts to avoid a financial bail out.

The economy is in its second recession in three years and 26% of Spain's population are unemployed.
