Actor Sean Penn paid tribute to Hugo Chavez in a statement issued to the Hollywood Reporter, lamenting the loss of a dear friend and reaffirming his support for his policies. He said:
"Today the people of the United States lost a friend it never knew it had. And poor people around the world lost a champion. I lost a friend I was blessed to have. My thoughts are with the family of Chavez and the people of Venezuela."
"Venezuela and its revolution will endure under the proven leadership of Vice President Maduro."
More than 20 world leaders are expected to attend the funeral today, but there will be no burial as he will be embalmed.
Thousands flocked to the streets of Caracas to see the coffin of Chavez travel through the city to lie in state until Friday's funeral.
