Archbishop of Canterbury to miss Pope's inauguration

The new Archbishop of Canterbury will miss the inauguration of Pope Francis due to him being on a "pilgrimage of prayer", it was announced today.

Instead he will be represented in the Vatican by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.

While religious leaders gather in Rome for the Pope's inauguration mass, the Most Rev Justin Welby will be in Chichester for the concluding part of his journey.

He is due to be enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury on Thursday in a service at Canterbury Cathedral.
