Poll: Nearly half of population want Osborne to go

Nearly half the public want George Osborne to be replaced as Chancellor, according to an ITV News Index poll carried out by ComRes.

The research is a blow to Osborne on the eve of the budget, with only 18% thinking he should stay, 44% saying he should be replaced and 38% saying they don’t know.

There is no clear frontrunner to replace the Chancellor.

Some 12% want Vince Cable, 5% name William Hague and 3% say Theresa May – while 22% simply call for ‘someone else’.

Some 41% think Osborne should abandon his current planned spending cuts in favour of investment in infrastructure - even if this would mean adding to the deficit.
