Nearly half the public want George Osborne to be replaced as Chancellor, according to an ITV News Index poll carried out by ComRes.
The research is a blow to Osborne on the eve of the budget, with only 18% thinking he should stay, 44% saying he should be replaced and 38% saying they don’t know.
There is no clear frontrunner to replace the Chancellor.
Some 12% want Vince Cable, 5% name William Hague and 3% say Theresa May – while 22% simply call for ‘someone else’.
Some 41% think Osborne should abandon his current planned spending cuts in favour of investment in infrastructure - even if this would mean adding to the deficit.
