The man in charge of Russia's famous Bolshoi theatre says claims dancers were used as part of an exclusive escort service are "nonsense".

On Sunday former ballerina Anastasia Volochkova accused the theatre of providing dancers as escorts for wealthy Russian businessmen.

But Bolshoi boss Anatoly Iksanov dismissed the allegations.

"What are you talking about? I have not applied to be Anastasia's (Volochkova) PR agent, so I don't plan to comment [on the claims]," he told a press conference.

"The fact that this is nonsense, well, it is nonsense," he said.
