Elephant seal goes for a waddle up Brazilian high street

A massive elephant seal, estimated to weigh more than a half ton, took a leisurely stroll through the streets of a Brazilian resort town over the weekend, blocking traffic for more than an hour.

The three-metre-long creature waddled out of the Atlantic Ocean late Saturday afternoon and headed up the beach straight for the main ocean drag in the beach city of Balneario Camboriu in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

Police officers and fire-fighters splashed water on the beast, which politely used the crossing, during its unexpected adventure.

Local sources said the animal finally returned to the water after about an hour and a half.
