Actor Clive Mantle, from hit TV series Game of Thrones, has had part of his ear bitten off, it emerged today.

The 55-year-old actor, who has also appeared on the BBC's medical drama Casualty, has underwent surgery to save his ear after being attacked early yesterday morning.

Mr Mantle was staying at a Travelodge in Newcastle after appearing in a touring production of The Ladykillers at the city's Theatre Royal. It is believed he was attacked at around 4:30am after asking other guests to keep the noise down.

Police and ambulance crews were called after the incident, and the part of his ear which was severed was re-attached. He is due to see a specialist tomorrow. A spokesman for his agent said he was "very badly shaken up" and "very wobbly" following the ordeal.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent and will appear before Newcastle Magistrates next month.

Mr Mantle, who is over 6ft 5ins tall, played Greatjon Umber, a Northern lord, in the first series of Game of Thrones. In Casualty he played surgeon Mike Barrett.
