A day after his surprise visit to Iraq, US Secretary of State John Kerry has flown to Afghanistan for previously unannounced talks with President Hamid Karzai.

A US official said the pair will discuss a host of issues including Afghan reconciliation, the transfer of security responsibility to Afghan forces ahead of a foreign withdrawal and Afghanistan's elections.
