US stock market briefly plunges after hacked AP tweet

The US stock market briefly nosedived today after a hacked tweet from the account of major news agency Associated Press said Barack Obama had been injured in explosions at the White House.

The Dow Jones market index plunged nearly 150 points immediately after the tweet was posted, returning to around 14700 points ten minutes later.

The AP corporate communications account said the tweet was "bogus" and a White House spokesman said Barack Obama was "fine".

The @ap Twitter account has been suspended after it was hacked. The tweet about an attack on the White House was false.
