Helen Mirren: 'I was very cross' about drummers' noise

Wearing T-shirt supporting drummers, Dame Helen Mirren, has said she will be supporting drummers - just not when they play outside theatres.

Dame Helen Mirren broke character from her regal role on Saturday evening when she yelled at a group of drummers to be quiet while still dressed in her stage costume as Queen Elizabeth II.

When she was asked if she would do the same again, she replied: "Yes, if they make the same noise, I would say the same again. I was upset and very cross. I had just spent five minutes on stage trying to allow the audience to hear what I was saying, which was sort of impossible."

The Olivier Award winning actress left the Gielgud theatre in London during the interval to confront the group of performers who had stopped for a drum crescendo outside a nearby pub.
