Beverley Callard, who plays Liz McDonald, is heading back to Coronation Street after two-and-a-half years away from the soap.
The character left Weatherfield for Spain in 2011 but is now set to be reunited with on-screen son Steve McDonald, played by Simon Gregson, in October.
Ms Callard, who first appeared on the cobbles in 1989, revealed her joy at the news of her return:
"I am coming home and I can't wait. I am so excited to be back, I have missed Liz so it will be great to play her again. Hopefully her skirts will have a got a little bit longer but we will see.
"I have been getting texts from Simon (who plays Steve) saying we are going to rock the place and can't wait to work with Kym (Marsh, who plays Michelle) again and see if we can control the giggles."
Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn said he was thrilled to welcome back such a "fantastic actor" and "a truly wonderful character" back to the street.
