Retail sales hit record levels

Retail sales hit record levels in May with an annual increase of 1.9%. There has also been a larger than expected increase in monthly sales, up 2.1%, as sales rebounded from an unseasonably cold April.

Food sector performance boosts overall retail sales

The Office for National Statistics said the amount spend in the food sector increased by 3.4% in April 2013 compared with the same month last year.

The same figure increased by 2.1% in April compared to May this year.

"Feedback from retailers suggested that promotions on summer ranges led to this increase in sales," the ONS added.
