Former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden has applied for temporary asylum in Russia oafter three weeks holed up at a Moscow airport trying to avoid prosecution in the United States on espionage charges.

Fugitive Edward Snowden has been pictured at Moscow airport meeting with human rights groups as he discusses asylum plans.

The photo, the first of Snowden to be released since he made a series of intelligence leaks in an interview with the Guardian newspaper last month, shows him meeting with Sarah Harrison of Wikileaks.
