Opener Chris Rogers hit an unbeaten half century as Australia made a strong start in their pursuit of 311 to win the first Test at Trent Bridge.

But Joe Root's wicket with the last ball of the afternoon session maintained the upper hand for England, with the tourists 111-2 at tea.

Stuart Broad got England's other wicket, dismissing Shane Watson lbw after the Australian openers put on 84 for the first wicket.
