North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un has visited the construction site of a multi-million pound ski resort project.

He ordered the country's military to start work on a “world-class” ski resort, as rivals South Korea build their own site to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Describing the resort as a “gigantic patriotic work’’, Mr Kim has said he wanted the facility – with 69 miles of multilevel ski runs, a hotel, heliport and cable cars – completed by the end of the year.

On Thursday, the UN launched an urgent appeal for $98 million (£63 million) to meet critical humanitarian needs in North Korea for the rest of 2013.
