NHS managers have squandered £1.4 billion on axing staff as part of the Prime Minister's shake-up of the health service, Labour have claimed.

Latest Department of Health figures show pay-offs were given to 330 managers topping £200,000.

157 NHS stay receive payouts worth more than £200K

Department of Health figures show that in the 12 months to April 2013, NHS managers approved 12,171 "exit packages" for staff - many of whom could be re-employed under different contracts.

The figures, released by Labour, show:

  • 157 managers got more than £200,000 - up 50% from the year before
  • 801 managers were awarded between £100,000 and £200,000, also up more than 50%
