Police in the Maldives have detained a coconut suspected of being cursed in case it discouraged residents from voting at a polling booth at a nearby school.

"They want us to take responsibility if anyone is struck by a spell or falls ill," police on the Guraidhoo island told the local CNM news site.

The suspicious coconut, described as "young", was taken into police care on Tuesday morning but no arrests have yet been made, the site reported.

“Now the police and school officials are more aware and police are patrolling the school at night, so magicians can’t practice real black magic,” a source told the Maldives news outlet Minivian.
