Consumers are due to spend £2 billion more this year than last, according to new research from retail specialist Verdict.

Verdict forecast spending would rise 2.2% from the same period in 2012 to 88.4 billion - the best since 2007 when fourth-quarter spending grew 3.1% to 82.4 billion.

Increased consumer confidence, job creation, a pick-up in the housing market and the baby boom during the recession were all cited as reasons for the pick-up.
