Senate agree US debt bill

The US Senate has passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a potential default. It will now be sent to the House of Representatives for a final vote. President Obama has said he will sign the bill "immediately" after the House vote.

Obama to meet Democratic leaders over debt crisis

US President Barack Obama will meet Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, and other House Democratic leaders, the White House said in a statement.

The meeting, scheduled for 3:15pm local time (8:15pm UK time), comes as the White House rejected a proposal by House Republicans to end the stalemate as "partisan".
