18-foot-long oarfish found off the Californian coast

The silvery carcass of an 18-foot-long-(5.5-metre-long) oarfish was found by a snorkeller off the coast of southern California.

Marine science instructor Jasmine Santana, of the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI), needed more than 15 helpers to drag the serpent-like creature to the shore of Santa Catalina Island.

Staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime as sightings of the creature are rare.
