Obama welcomes debt deal reached in Senate

US President Barack Obama has said he believes a bipartisan deal reached by Senate leaders will re-open Government and remove the threat of a default.

The White House encouraged Congress to act swiftly to pass the deal.

The US Senate has passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a potential default. It will now be sent to the House of Representatives for a final vote. President Obama has said he will sign the bill "immediately" after the House vote.
