Senate agree US debt bill

The US Senate has passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a potential default. It will now be sent to the House of Representatives for a final vote. President Obama has said he will sign the bill "immediately" after the House vote.

Senate Republican leader 'confident' deal will pass

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has said he is "confident" that both chambers of Congress will agree a deal to avert the US debt crisis before the end of the day.

He told the Senate it had been a "long, challenging few weeks for Congress and for the country".
