Three people have died after a vehicle veered through a crowd and crashed in front the iconic Tiananmen Gate in central Beijing, Chinese state media reported.
The Xinhua News Agency said several tourists and policemen also were injured in today's accident.
The gate is one of the southern entrances to the former imperial palace and stands at the top of sprawling Tiananmen Square.
Chinese authorities were calling it a car accident. But now they are hunting suspects in what could be Beijing's first major suicide attack.
There is clearly a security operation underway to deal with what state media has been calling an accident.
