Chinese authorities suspect yesterday's fatal Tiananmen Square car crash was the work of suicide attackers, Reuters reported, citing sources.
"It looks like a premeditated suicide attack," the source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. "It was no accident. The jeep knocked down barricades and rammed into pedestrians. The three men [in the vehicle] had no plans to flee from the scene."
Police have yet to determine the identities of the three people in the jeep, the sources said. Yesterday evening Beijing police said they were looking for two suspects from the restive far western region of Xinjiang in connection with a "major incident".
Chinese authorities were calling it a car accident. But now they are hunting suspects in what could be Beijing's first major suicide attack.
There is clearly a security operation underway to deal with what state media has been calling an accident.
