Michael Schumacher 'critical' after skiing accident

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is in hospital in a "critical" condition following a skiing accident this morning.

The seven-time world champion suffered a head injury while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel.

The hospital treating the 44-year-old German said in a statement he was "suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation".

Michael Schumacher's family has confirmed that sedation of the former Formula One champion has been reduced to allow the 'start of the waking up process'. Schumacher suffered a serious head injury following a skiing accident in December.
