Thames water overflows during flood barrier closure

Rising flood waters have breached the banks at the Thames Barrier in east London while it remained closed against the high tide.

The capital's flood defence was closed for three hours this afternoon to protect people and property along the river, according to the Environment Agency.

A time-lapse video filmed by local resident Michael Snasdell captured the breaching of nearby fences after the water levels increased:

Residents along Thames prepare for more flooding

The Environment Agency has warned communities along the River Thames throughout Surrey, Berkshire and Oxfordshire of the risk of further flooding, after it burst its banks. There are currently more than 70 flood warnings in place.
