Fire at naval dockyard where HMS Illustrious returned

A fire broke out at Portsmouth's naval dockyard hours after HMS Illustrious returned from an aid mission to the Philippines. Ten fire appliances and two aerial ladder platforms were called to the base just before 10pm last night following the blaze in an empty two-storey office.

The fire was in the roof and first floor but it was brought under control and crews left the scene at about 9.30am this morning. A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the fire was not related to the return of HMS Illustrious.

Officer in charge Steve Foye said: "Fire crews were on scene quickly and set to work. Further resources were requested to keep the fire contained to prevent the fire spreading to other buildings.

"We worked well together with the owners and other agencies which allowed us to contain and extinguish the fire swiftly."

There were no reports of injuries.
