Ann Maguire, who was stabbed to death yesterday, has been described by the local council as "an amazing inspirational teacher" and "a real asset to the city of Leeds".
Nigel Richardson, the director of children's services at Leeds City Council, said the main concern now was to offer support to those affected by "a tragic, isolated incident".
Although a shocking attack, this is a rare attack. There are few other occasions when a teacher was stabbed inside their school by a pupil.
A 15-year-old schoolboy is in police custody tonight, suspected of stabbing to death his teacher.
