Merkel and Putin discuss Ukraine in phone call

The leaders of Germany and Russia have discussed the situation in Ukraine via phone, Reuters has reported.

Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Russia's Vladimir Putin to help free European military observers in Ukraine, whilst the Russian premier insisted that the withdrawal of Kiev's military units from south eastern Ukraine and a "national dialogue" with separatists was key to resolving the situation.
