Family reunited with pet dog lost in Superstorm Sandy

A US family who decided it was finally time to visit an animal shelter for a new dog after their beloved terrier-pit bull mix went missing during Superstorm Sandy were stunned to find their old pet up for adoption.

The James family, from New Jersey, had searched for the brown-and-white dog, named Reckless, for months after the October 2012 storm before finally giving up hope.

They went to an animal rescue centre on Thursday for a new companion, but spotted a familiar face among the rescued pets.

"He was a little bigger than I remembered because they had fed him well," said owner Chuck James. "But then he was laying on my wife's feet, and I knew it was him. ... I was in disbelief. I know this dog is meant to be with our family."
