Health chiefs have launched an investigation after a patient at the Royal Livepool hospital was given a vasectomy by mistake after going in for minor surgery.
The Liverpool Echo reports that doctors have tried to reverse the procedure but the man is now waiting to find out whether or not he will be able to have children.
Hospital bosses described the blunder as a "never event" - the kind of mistake which should not take place under any circumstances.
The hospital's medical director, Dr Peter Williams, said: “We have apologised unreservedly to the patient and we are offering him our full support. We greatly regret the distress this has caused him."
The surgeon who carried out the vasectomy has been suspended pending an internal inquiry.
