The Deputy Prime Minister accused eurosceptics of abandoning one of the "greatest traditions of Great Britain" as he defended his statement that Ukip and anti-EU Tories are "false patriots" who mask their nationalism as British bulldog spirit.

Speaking on LBC's Call Clegg programme, he said:

"The history of our greatness has been precisely because we don't just turn inwards, we don't just put a 'to hell with it' sign on the cliffs of Dover."

"That is why it is such a pity that you have people like Nigel Farage and others saying that somehow it's a good thing for us to turn our backs on the rest of the world because I just don't believe that is in line with the greatest traditions of Great Britain."
