Vince Cable has admitted he is braced for a "difficult night" but claimed he expects losses for the Liberal Democrats to be lower than predicted.
Speaking on Sky News, he said:
"It is going to be a difficult night - I think we've never concealed that - but not just for us. I think both Labour and the Conservatives will find it difficult tonight.
"But we're in Government, we take a kicking for the things the Government does that are unpopular and it does reflect on us."
UKIP's successes in the local elections have raised the possibility of them winning a Westminster seat at the general election.
