More than 1,400 football hooligans in England will have to hand over their passports to police to stop them travelling to the World Cup in a crackdown on soccer violence.

Police said convicted trouble-makers will have to surrender their documents tomorrow or Tuesday to prevent them jetting out to the tournament, which kicks off next month in Brazil.

The prohibition applies to everyone who has been convicted of football-related violence and handed a banning order with travel restrictions by the courts. Anyone who flouts it could be hauled before a judge.
