Merkel 'calls for Lagarde as EU Commission chief'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has asked France if it is willing to put forward Christine Lagarde as the next chief of the EU Commission, sources have told the Reuters news agency.

Ms Lagarde is current managing director of the International Monetary Fund and former French Finance Minister.
