A D-Day veteran has told ITV News that the "heroes" of World War II were "about the finest generation this country has ever had".
John Ainsworth, who chairs the Hull branch of the Normandy Veterans' Association, also said the women who had to remain in the UK were "equally" heroic for raising their families in the "abnormal" circumstances of the war.
