The leader of the Islamic State, formerly Isis, has released the first audiotape calling for jihad since the group renamed. The group is currently battling Iraqi forces across large parts of the country.

Islamist militants 'capture' Iraq's second city Mosul

Iraq's prime minister Nuri al-Maliki has asked parliament to declare a state of emergency in the country after Sunni Islamist insurgents took control of most of the country's second largest city, Mosul, in a daring military raid.

Militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and their allies overran a military base and freed hundreds of prisoners earlier today.
