Nato ambassadors hold emergency Iraq meeting

Nato ambassadors have this evening held an emergency meeting at Turkey's request to discuss the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Iraq.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has also spoken to Turkey's Foreign Minister about the recent violence.

The Turks are particularly concerned that 80 of their citizens have been taken hostage in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, where about 500,000 people have been displaced by the attack from Islamist group ISIS.

According to a Nato official, Turkey "briefed allies about the situation in Mosul and the hostage-taking of Turkish citizens, including the consul general".
