The United Kingdom has deployed humanitarian experts to Iraq to help assess the situation as over half a million people flee the Islamist insurgency in the north of the country.
In a statement, International Development Secretary Justine Greening said:
“Hundreds of thousands of people, including vulnerable women and children, are being forced to flee their homes as fighting spreads across Northern Iraq.
“Last night I deployed a team of humanitarian experts to assess the situation on the ground and coordinate with our partners. We are monitoring the situation very closely and stand ready to provide whatever help is needed.”
The Foreign Secretary has been clear on the threat of Isis, but he has ruled out the prospect of any UK military involvement in the crisis.
Iraq’s foreign minister, Hoshyar Zebari, is a natural diplomat. Polite, immaculately dressed, and blessed with a great memory.
Isis has paraded military equipment in Mosul it captured from when the Iraqi army fled in what some see as a "nightmare scenario."
