Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's former president, says he fears the worst for some of the schoolgirls kidnapped by militant group Boko Haram in April.

"I believe that some of them will never return," he told the BBC's Hausa-language radio service in some of the most pessimistic comments yet to be expressed on their fate.

"We will still be hearing about them many years from now," he added.

Obasanjo said President Goodluck Jonathan's administration had taken too long to respond to the mass abduction in the remote northeastern village of Chibok, Nigeria.
