US 'preparing to discuss Iraq situation with Iran'

The US is preparing to begin direct talks with Iran on the security situation in Iraq, The Wall Street Journal (£) reported, citing senior US officials.

The newspaper said the talks are expected to begin this week, after Sunni militants gained control of large areas of northern Iraq.

It comes as the US and other world powers strive for an agreement with Tehran to curb its nuclear program.

Islamic State leader calls for jihad in audio message

The leader of the Islamic State, formerly Isis, has released the first audiotape calling for jihad since the group renamed. The group is currently battling Iraqi forces across large parts of the country.
