The world has a duty to fight the ongoing "terrorist scourge" in northern Iraq, Zuhair al-Nahar, a spokesman for the Iraqi prime minister has told the BBC.
Mr al-Nahar said: "The government and the armed forces and the volunteers have stopped any advance of the Isis terrorists.
"This terrorist scourge is destabilising the whole area. Iraq needs all the support it can get," he said.
The Iraqi Ministry of Defence have also uploaded a number of videos to YouTube, claiming targeted airstrikes in Nineveh, Salahuddin and Samarra.
The Foreign Secretary has been clear on the threat of Isis, but he has ruled out the prospect of any UK military involvement in the crisis.
Iraq’s foreign minister, Hoshyar Zebari, is a natural diplomat. Polite, immaculately dressed, and blessed with a great memory.
Isis has paraded military equipment in Mosul it captured from when the Iraqi army fled in what some see as a "nightmare scenario."
