England knocked out of World Cup as Italy lose

England have been knocked out of the World Cup after Costa Rica clinched a 1-0 win over Italy in their Group D match in Recife.

Bryan Ruiz's first-half header sent the Central American team into the second round of the tournament for the first time in one of the biggest shocks of the competition so far.

Roy Hodgson's side needed Italy to win the match to keep alive their hopes of avoiding elimination, but they now become the first England team to be knocked out at the group stages since 1958.
