Rooney apologises after England's World Cup exit

Wayne Rooney has apologised to England fans following their World Cup elimination.

Roy Hodgson's side were knocked out after just two matches, as a result of defeats to Italy and Uruguay.

England needed Italy to win their two remaining games to stand any chance of progressing from Group D, but the Azzurri's 1-0 loss to Costa Rica sealed their fate.

In a post on Facebook, Rooney said: "Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out. Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted!"
