The battle for Baghdad 'may have only just begun'

As the parades were going on today in Baghdad, news came from the west of Iraq about the fall to Isis extremists of a strategically vital border crossing with Syria that could allow the insurgents to establish a supply route for an assault on the Iraqi capital.

Iraqi government forces are holding off the Sunni extremists to the north but the battle for this city may have only just begun and it may become a brutal sectarian fight.

Islamic State leader calls for jihad in audio message

The leader of the Islamic State, formerly Isis, has released the first audiotape calling for jihad since the group renamed. The group is currently battling Iraqi forces across large parts of the country.
