James Ward has joined the list of British hopes that have crashed out on the first day of the championships, downed in straight sets by 17th seed Mikhail Youzhny.

Sydney-born Johanna Konta was the first Briton to slip out of Wimbledon, losing 6-4 3-6 6-4 to world number 60 Peng.

Dan Cox was the third British hope to fall, slipping to the superior class of world number 42 Jeremy Chardy despite pushing the Frenchman to four sets.
