David Cameron insisted Jean-Claude Juncker was the wrong person to lead the European Commission, although it looks likely that he will be voted in as President.
The Prime Minister said, "I know the odds are stacked against me but that doesn't mean you change your mind. It means you stand up for what you believe and you vote accordingly."
It should be no surprise that David Cameron failed to stop such a long-standing EU figure being nominated as European Commission president.
The PM's friends in Europe are bewildered that he would rather go down in flames than try for the best deal possible in the circumstances.
